A Broader Perspective Through Sociology
Sociology,
or the study of society and social relations, may seem like a far-off topic
without much relevance. This could not be further from the truth. The past few
articles and chapters that I have read have shown and proved that sociology can
be helpful in your life at any point. Here, I present a small glimpse into how
sociology can be useful in one's life in just a few ways.
One way that sociology helps is by developing the skill of understanding human
behavior. A necessity in many careers,
which will take you far. Our textbook for this class, Introduction to
Sociology 3e, mentions that "sociology can be an asset in
careers like sales, public relations, journalism, teaching, law, and criminal
justice."² The skills obtained from sociology can assist in a
variety of careers. Knowledge of sociology
gives us skills that would take much longer to acquire if we entered the
workforce without it.
No matter where you work, live, or what language you speak, one sociological
skill that will take you far is critical thinking. It is an invaluable skill
for everyone, from corporate CEOs to volunteers at non-profits. Sociology
requires us to think critically about social issues, requiring us to ask
difficult questions and find the answers. It makes us realize the depth of
society, which can increase our cognitive capacity. Simply put, thinking more
about deep and complicated things will increase our critical thinking.
Critical thinking naturally leads to another skill, Understanding Social Issues.
Today, we face many social issues and an overload of information, which is hard
to ignore. Sometimes it is hard to understand what is actually going on.
Sociology gives us a perspective on many of these issues. Understanding social
issues in our world is a valuable skill than it may seem at first.
Each of
these skills builds toward the greater goal of broadening our perspective. As
C. Wright Mills--American Sociologist--pointed out in his book, The
Sociological Imagination, "to be aware of the idea of a social structure
and to use it with sensibility is to be capable of tracing such linkages among
a great variety of milieux."¹ Although his language is
complex, the idea is very relevant when understood well. Mills is saying that
if one is aware of society's structure and applies that knowledge, they will be
able to understand the many larger interconnected environments. This perspective
helps in many different situations, including communication, broadening our
understanding, and allowing us to interact with the world differently.
In conclusion, sociology has numerous benefits. From preparing us for a wide
variety of careers, to gaining a broader perspective and critical thinking, all
the way to understanding social issues. Sociology gives a large variety of
skills for anyone who properly studies it. The texts and readings that we have
covered so far have really shown that sociology is very useful in our lives. We grow in life by regularly applying these sociological
skills.
